NSW: 250 workers strike over entitlements security = 2
ETU spokesman Matt Murphy said the Solectron workers wanted their entitlements guaranteed
as part of a new enterprise bargaining agreement.
Their industrial action was being taken during the bargaining period for the agreement
and was therefore protected under the federal Workplace Relations Act.
Mr Murphy said the workers' concern for their entitlements had been generated by "the
whole litany of corporate collapses" including phone company One.Tel and insurance giant
HIH.
"This is a genuine rank and file concern, it's been generated by the rank and file
and being pursued by them," he told AAP.
About 250 workers had already walked off the job and the afternoon and night shifts
- totalling about 100 people - would follow suit, he said.
Workers would hold a mass meeting to consider their position on Wednesday morning,
and the matter was expected to go before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission
later this week.
Solectron, based in Liverpool, makes phone and computer components.
